Sachin Duggal
Builder.ai: $180M Accounting Fraud
Sachin Duggal founded Builder.ai with a pitch that resonated perfectly with the AI hype cycle: an artificial intelligence platform that could build custom software applications without traditional development, making app creation accessible to anyone. The promise attracted significant venture capital investment, and Duggal became a fixture on the conference circuit, presenting himself as a visionary at the intersection of AI and democratized technology. Investors, media, and potential customers were drawn in by the story of a platform that could replace expensive development teams with intelligent automation. The reality behind the pitch was far less impressive.
Investigations revealed that Builder.ai's supposed AI capabilities were substantially overstated. Much of the actual development work was performed by human developers, not artificial intelligence. The platform was engaging in what has become known as AI-washing: wrapping human labor in AI branding to command premium pricing and justify inflated valuations. Customers who believed they were buying AI-powered efficiency were instead paying for a rebranded outsourcing service. The gap between what was marketed and what was delivered was not a matter of exaggeration but of fundamental misrepresentation.
The accounting fraud compounded the technology fraud. Builder.ai fabricated approximately $180 million in revenue, creating fictional financial records to maintain the appearance of a rapidly growing company. Investors who committed capital based on these financials were investing in a company whose actual performance bore no resemblance to its reported numbers. The fraud was systemic and sustained, requiring ongoing fabrication to maintain the illusion of growth that attracted each successive round of funding.
When the fraud was uncovered, the collapse was swift and total. Duggal was removed as CEO, and the company entered insolvency proceedings. Employees lost their jobs, investors lost their capital, and customers lost a service they had been relying on. Builder.ai became one of the most significant examples of the twin frauds defining the current technology era: AI-washing, where companies claim artificial intelligence capabilities they do not possess, and financial fraud, where fabricated numbers sustain the illusion long enough to extract maximum capital before the truth catches up.
